The first manufacturing line, based on QFLex technology and devoted to cosmetic tubes, has been recently started up at Qtube – a new brand belonging to 3 Druk Group, the Polish packaging producer based in Cracow.  A Mark Andy Evolution Series E5 flexo press is one of the most important elements of this innovative project, and according to Qtubes’ management, QFlex technology is its response to the changing needs of its customers and enables short- to mid-run production of cosmetic tubes. These tubes offer a high level of elasticity and high quality of decoration. They can be applied partially or entirely with a metallic layer as well as covered with QProtect – a gloss or matt antibacterial varnish. The complete process is sustainable and eco-friendly, according to 3 Druk Group’s customers’ expectations.

Please watch the movie about the Qtubes’ project

QFlex – the Globally Innovative Technology
Qtubes is a new product for leading cosmetic brands in Poland.  It offers cosmetic packaging (tubes) manufactured with globally innovative technology – QFlex, which combines the best elements of the two dominant tube production technologies: extruded and laminated.  “As a result, we produce perfectly printed, fully extruded elastic cosmetic tubes that enhance and differentiate a branded product on a shop shelf,” – says Dariusz Kosinski, Managing Director of Qtubes.  “Moreover, we’re doing our best to make our production process as sustainable as possible. Based on the 3R philosophy (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), we’re focusing on waste reduction and assets upcycling.  An important difference in our activities is that the tubes are covered by QProtect – a patented anti-bacteria layer. It prevents the growth of bacteria and therefore prevents infection.  This layer has biocidal properties and is an integral part of a varnish layer.  It all results in us being able to offer innovative tubes in response to the current needs of market and our customers.  We can also offer shorter delivery times of compared with other companies who use traditional methods of tube printing. We are now able to produce affordable short- and mid-runs, according to current market needs and expectations.”

Qtubes are offered in three different diameters: 35, 40 and 50 mm. They can be manufactured with an EVOH barrier that is a protective and safety layer against oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and helium.  It also reduces the amount of preservatives and extends the product’s shelf life, while maintaining its fragrance, color, and freshness.  Qtubes can be recycled according to the EU regulations making them more eco-friendly and safer for the environment, which also meets customers’ and consumers’ expectations.  The production process combines tube-formed extruded polyethylene with pre-printed substrate.  The product’s specifications are configured according to customers’ needs and expectations.  According to Dariusz Kosinski: ,“QFlex technology guarantees high quality and precise flexo printing, while using a flat substrate.  The Mark Andy press has 11 flexo print units and a cold stamping module, with full visual control and 360° printing.  “QFlex technology reduces production costs because we can use substrates 6 times thinner than standard, which minimizes waste and opens new opportunities for our customers” – says Dariusz Kosinski.

Mark Andy Evolution Series E5 –  an important part of the Qtubes project
Dariusz Kosinski says the Mark Andy Evolution Series E5 flexo press is an important part of this innovative manufacturing line.  “When we started the project, our aim was to increase the competitiveness of our company.  Thanks to Qtubes, we are now able to deal with customers from the cosmetics industry in more complex way.  The project was implemented with EU funds, so the printing press was chosen on a closed-bid basis.  We needed a press that offered the highest standards and print quality to streamline our production process.  The Mark Andy Evolution Series E5 proved to offer the most in the bidding process, and from the start we were very impressed with Mark Andy’s approach: its comprehensive support, advice, and quick response to all the questions and concerns we had.  Last, but not least, Mark Andy’s European HQ, including a professional service team, is located in Warsaw, which means a lot to us.   The E5 press has been in commercial production for a more than a year now and is a real game-changer.  It enables us to offer completely new products to Polish companies and others from around Europe, which have previously only known the traditional and simpler tube manufacturing method.  The Mark Andy press also offers the highest print quality, which distinguishes us on the market and gives us the huge competitive edge.”

The Qtubes brand, as with the entire 3D Group, is focused on sustainable and eco-friendly activities in terms of manufacturing processes. “On a daily basis we try to reduce as much waste as possible,” – Dariusz Kosinski states.  Because we can decorate laminates of 60-microns, we have reduced the volume of waste six-fold.  We have also reduced energy and manage consumables and substrates in a sustainable way with the inline manufacturing process, and deliver them for recycling, which reduces waste considerably.  We’re able to manufacture tubes consisting of 83% PCR/PIR (Post Customer Recycling / Post Industrial Recycling) materials.  Basing this on circular economy principles, we segregate and deliver plastics for recycling – at this stage the small amount of waste does not allow us to run the recycling process in house.  Qtubes also manufactures electricity from solar energy.  We use heat pumps and a recuperation system for heat recovery – we gather and use waste water and heat the entire factory with heat generated during the production process.  We use natural light and eco-friendly transport – ironically, the company is also surrounded by flower meadows, which are a perfect environment for the bees that live in our own hives.  It all makes Qtubes a very modern and innovative plant, operating according to sustainable philosophy and offering tubes representing the highest global standards.” – Dariusz Kosinski concludes.

Speaking for Mark Andy, European Sales Manager, Lukasz Chruslinski commented: “We’re extremely happy to be involved with such an innovative technology project.  It confirms that Mark Andy’s presses perfectly suit the requirements and expectations of companies focused on niche products, with the tubes offered by Qtubes exceeding market standards and diversity.  In addition, Mark Andy products enable us to meet the needs of companies working in different markets.  Innovative print techniques, implemented in our presses, fit globally innovative technologies and projects, and Qtubes is the perfect example here.  We hope that its activities will become an inspiration for other companies operating in niche markets and offering a special selection of products, or those considering starting such a business.  Qtubes has opened completely new opportunities in the industry and Mark Andy has a variety of technology to offer many different companies – both win out!”

A Comprehensive Q&A Session with Ben Luly, Product Manager, Digital Presses at Mark Andy

In a recent interview, Trisha Smith, Marketing and Business Development Manager, engaged with Ben Luly, newly appointed Product Manager, Digital Presses at Mark Andy. The discussion delves into Ben’s previous experiences, current responsibilities, future aspirations, and a shared enthusiasm for the digital press industry.

Trisha Smith (TS): How long have you been with Mark Andy and what is your background?

Ben Luly (BL): I graduated in 2012 from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.  After college I worked in heavy equipment for the construction and agricultural industries, before signing on with Mark Andy in 2014.  For the past nine years I have had the privilege of being mentored by many incredible people within this organization who have helped to grow my skillset as an engineer.  I look forward to bringing those skills and knowledge along with me, continuing to add value to this organization in the role of product manager for digital presses.

TS: Why do you believe that digital is a viable path for the future?

BL: Digital printing technology has advanced so much in the time I have been in this industry. Its evolution to a more user-friendly technology with a more automated and streamlined workflow, and high quality at faster press speeds has been fun to see. Ink and toner technology has continued to improve, with a focus on durability, sustainability, and compatibility with a wider range of substrates.  With all of these enhancements, digital printing continues to move out of micro and short run jobs and is breaking into medium to longer runs by lowering the cost to print, which to me signifies a really promising future for the technology.

TS: What excites you about digital?

BL: The technology and precision are fascinating.  I greatly admire those who put in the countless hours to continually push the boundaries of what’s possible in the machines being developed.  The advancements we have seen by combining our industry-leading web handling platforms along with our in-house digital and partner technology make for an exciting time.  I’m also excited to work for a company that offers a complete solution, enabling our customers to be successful with their digital/hybrid presses, while also receiving outstanding customer, technical, and application support, as well as a comprehensive consumables offering.

TS: What trends do you see with digital?

BL: We are seeing growth in the demand for personalized and customized labels, using variable data printing or versioning, and a requirement for cost effective runs at varying lengths. Hybrid presses continue to make a compelling case as they offer the best of both technologies, allowing customers to maximize their benefits.  Improvements are being made in color management, especially for brand consistency.  With increased need for product security, digital printing is being used for incorporating security features such as QR codes, variable data, and invisible ink.  The adoption of digital finishing solutions, such as digital embellishment is also growing.

TS: What can we expect from Mark Andy regarding digital in the future?

BL: Mark Andy will continue to be a key player in the digital and hybrid space, finding new and innovative ways to support streamlined workflows, more sustainable processes, and increased speeds.  We will continue to foster our relationships with digital technology partners, consumable suppliers, and our customers, working together to find solutions to help everyone succeed.

Sustainability is no longer a buzzword; it’s a necessity. Companies are looking for innovative and effective solutions to reduce their environmental impact. The implementation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) into the supply chain has proven an effective way to do this and Mark Andy, a global leader in printing and converting equipment, is seeing an increase in the number of converters looking to add RFID insertion into their portfolio.

RFID technology has revolutionized how brand owners manage their operations and embrace sustainability. By partnering with Mark Andy, converters are better able to support their customers in waste reduction, resource optimization, and environmental responsibility.

A major advantage of RFID technology is improved inventory management. Accurate real-time tracking minimizes waste and overstocking, optimizing the supply chain. This reduces environmental impact and yields significant cost savings by eliminating excess production and mitigating the risk of product obsolescence.

RFID technology also enhances product traceability and authentication. By incorporating RFID tags, companies can ensure the authenticity and responsible sourcing of their goods. This helps combat counterfeiting, which not only harms businesses but also poses environmental risks due to substandard manufacturing processes.

Streamlining logistics and distribution processes is another benefit RFID technology offers. Real-time tracking from manufacturing to the consumer minimizes transportation emissions and optimizes route planning. Reducing unnecessary transportation and enhancing delivery accuracy further reduces the company’s carbon footprint and contributes to a greener future.

For more than 20 years Mark Andy has partnered with industry suppliers to offer high-quality RFID insertion technology, consistently innovating to meet the evolving needs of the market and empowering businesses to embrace sustainability, optimize operations, and make a positive impact on the environment.

Swedish start-up label converter NicEtikett has installed two Mark Andy Performance Series P7 presses at its production facility in Skåne County, Helsingborg, with a view to diversifying the product offering from narrow web flexo technology, according to owner and CEO Sten-Inge Fredin.

As the former owner of SCANDSTICK (now part of Beontag), Sten-Inge brings more than 40 years’ experience to the company that is located in beautifully restored farm buildings that previously stabled horses with an indoor riding school, as well as a label printing company with two small and ancient letterpress machines.  The whole site occupies almost 17,000 sqm and still includes more than 200 apple and pear trees and a soft fruit orchard.

A visit to the production site leaves visitors in no doubt that NicEtikett is being set up as a model company.  “We have all new technology of the best type that money can buy,” he stated, adding “The two Mark Andy presses have the 20” web width – one is an eight-colour fitted with Vetaphone corona treater, chill drums and GEW UV curing – the other is a four-colour with both water-base and UV ink capability.  They will give us the flexibility we need to grow our product portfolio.”  Both presses are currently being commissioned and will come online in October.  Also on order are a Ben Bunch fan folder and Rietstack stacker to add capability for folded and sheeted labels.

Right now, the company is being pro-active in the recruitment market.  The location offers a good selection of new housing nearby, and a convenient 10-minute rail link into Helsingborg was opened recently.  With stylish offices and brand-new production facilities, Sten Inge is keen to attract the best qualified people to launch his new venture.  Looking to gear up for 24/7 production, he foresees staff numbers of around 25 with an additional 10 or so for admin.

Speaking for Mark Andy, Sales Manager of Scandinavian agent Convertec, Joakim Marcusson said:

“This is a very exciting project, and we are delighted to be involved from the very beginning – NicEtikett looks certain to make a major impact on the Scandinavian label market, and beyond, and I am confident the two Performance P7 presses will offer all the flexible production capability required.”

Family-owned and managed Herzog Etiketten has added a Mark Andy Performance Series P7 to its impressive narrow web machine park in Rohrbach, Germany.  The high specification flexo line features full servo drive on a modular platform that is designed to accommodate a variety of printing, finishing, and converting techniques.

First established in 1924 as a printer of local newspapers, the company moved into sheet fed glue labels and posters after the Second World War, where one of its largest customers was Deutsche Post.  In 1974, Rolf Herzog became the third generation to lead the business and with his background in economics and marketing he set about realigning the company’s focus, initially into business forms, and when that market died, he moved into self-adhesive labels.

And it was this latest change that brought him into contact with Mark Andy at Labelexpo ‘89 in Brussels where a long conversation with the former head of Mark Andy Europe, Dieter Huck, convinced him that a 10” four-colour 2200 flexo press would be an ideal way to start.  Since then, Herzog has installed a total of seven Mark Andy presses, including the latest Performance Series P7 flexo and a Digital Pro 3 toner/hybrid.

The company moved into its present 2,000 sqm facility in 1999 where it now employs 30 people.  The timing coincided with the industry’s switch from water-based to UV technology, and wise words again from Dieter Huck prevented Herzog from committing too soon to the new technology.  Following a 4150 model and two LP3000s, Herzog installed a Performance Series P5 in 2016 and the Performance Series P7 in 2022 – both have LED/UV curing systems, the Performance P5 being a retrofitted upgrade from convectional arc lamps.

The company’s principal business is with the local wine growers of the Southern Palatinate, with whom Rolf Herzog has established a strong partnership over the years.  This high-quality work makes stringent demands on a printing press, especially with some of the label stocks preferred by the wine growers.  The new Performance P7 press is a six-colour 13” model (330mm), and is equipped with, amongst other ancillaries, a Pantec Rhino E flat-bed hot foil embossing and embellishment unit to achieve the top-quality labels required.  Capable of producing a variety of perceived added-value effects such as metallics, blind and foil embossing, textured foil, micro and nano embossing, and the placement of lenses, the Pantec unit is a perfect complement to the flexible production capacity of the P7 press.

The installation of a Mark Andy Digital Pro 3 press in 2019 marked a diversification from purely flexo print.  Acquired to handle runs from 1000 – 5000 labels, the toner based Digital Pro 3, which was the first to be installed in Germany, has inline finishing to complement its CMYK print capability at speeds up to 23m/min.  “For a flexo house, adapting to digital technology and a new way of thinking and operating has proved something of a challenge, but we can see the benefits it offers in handling multiple versions of short run labels and therefore freeing up capacity on our flexo presses,” said André Herzog, Rolf’s son, who is the next generation to be involved in the company.

Although the wine trade is a keystone in Herzog’s business, it has a portfolio of customers from the automotive, food, and general industry sectors too, which Rolf Herzog is keen to expand to secure the business a broader platform.  The new Mark Andy Performance P7 will give him the capacity to do this, and he concluded: “Mark Andy, in the person of Dieter Huck, gave me great advice all those years ago and much of the success the company has enjoyed is down to the fact that I listened carefully to what he said.  Herzog Etiketten has been built in no small part around the technology of one press manufacture – and it was the right one for us!”

Summing up for Mark Andy, Sales Manager Timo Donati added: “Seven Mark Andy presses from 1994 onwards is a remarkable feat for a family business and we are delighted to see the success that the Herzog company has enjoyed.  We look forward to being part of their future growth and meeting their demand for the latest technology.”

Following a four-year gap, Mark Andy reported a highly successful Labelexpo Europe, which was held in Brussels for the last time before moving to Barcelona in 2025.  The company showed three presses during live demos, including a global premiere – new flexo Pro Series as well as two hybrids: inkjet-based Digital Series HD (equipped with Kurz Distorun cold foiling unit and Lemu turret rewinder) and toner-based Digital Pro MAX. Mark Andy also noticed a huge interest in the company’s software solutions: sMArt link on-press monitoring system and ProWORX Label Suite imposition tool. Mark Andy welcomed over 800 visitors in four days from 84 countries around the world, which – as the company states – is an excellent result and a great indication of the value of Labelexpo to our industry. In total, 10 new press sales were signed during the show, including a new Pro Series model.

Speaking for the company, Executive VP in charge of international sales Tom Cavalco stated: “The high international attendance at Labelexpo Europe confirmed a growing narrow-web label market, full of opportunity. Outside of the large attendance expected from Europe, we were thrilled to welcome guests from Latin America, India, Far East and Australasia. The quality of conversations was excellent too, keeping both our staff and our team of global distributors busy throughout the show and resulting in multiple orders from across the globe.”

Lena Chmielewska-Bontron, European Marketing Manager adds: “Live demos were a big draw on the stand. Guests showed keen interest in both the technical side of the presses as well as the efficiency benefits they would bring to their business, namely the quick changeovers with no loss of quality. Having both hardware and software solutions on display reinforced our commitment to being a Total Solutions Partner. We also used this as an opportunity to demonstrate our pledge to environmental responsibility; waste reduction, energy efficiency and low carbon footprint of our presses, the use of compostable cups and plates, plus the stand banners which doubled as covers for transport back to the Poland showroom.”

A global premiere of Pro Series flexo platform

The Pro Series, making its global debut at Labelexpo, ran a Mark Andy Legends label at 150m/min. This new platform of fully servo driven presses delivers modern technology at a competitive price. Pro Series is a compact-size, comprehensive, highly efficient and flexible solution devoted to self-adhesive labels. Its upgradable design allows converters to expand their flexo capabilities or easily transition into digital with the option of adding a toner-based engine.

Growing interest in hybrids
The Digital Series HD printed and converted wine and beer labels as well as shrink sleeves at 73m/min using its full inkjet CMYKOV and UV flexo white capability. The configuration included a Kurz Distorun cold foiling unit and Lemu automatic turret rewinder.

The Digital Pro MAX, the third generation of Mark Andy’s highly successful toner/hybrid range, is faster, has lower cost-to-print, includes toner white, and can be available in configurations from roll-to-roll up to full hybrid. A variety of jobs were printed 1200 x 1200dpi at 40m/min for products including beer and vitamins. Our presses used Raflatac stocks with Kurz cold foil, Wink dies, and Rotometal tooling.

Exclusive software solutions from Mark Andy
With many label and narrow web converters finding it increasingly difficult to recruit high quality production personnel, the need for automation and simplification of workflow processes is growing in demand.  Mark Andy’s response is sMArt link, a cloud-based, on-press monitoring system which gives operation managers a real-time look at production data.  Lena Chmielewska-Bontron added: Operation managers are able to make immediate adjustments to reduce waste and errors and generate time and cost savings. The solution is also extremely versatile, integrating with new and existing Mark Andy presses, as well as other makes and models.”

Mark Andy ProWORX Label Suite, an exclusive imposition tool, also premiered at the show.  This new software streamlines and automates label production setup, including inline printing and embellishment processes. ProWORX Label Suite is an Adobe Creative Cloud extension tailored to Mark Andy’s hybrid presses.

Total Solutions Partner

With its declared aim of being a ‘total solutions partner’, Mark Andy engaged closely with co-suppliers on the stand in Brussels.  Kurz, GEW, and Lemu technology were all in action on the live demonstrations while Cheshire Anilox, tesa, and Nazdar products all featured heavily in the Mark Andy Print Products (MAPP) showcase area of the stand.

The MAPP team also demonstrated a new tabletop style HD Video Plate Mounter (VPM), along with information on the thousands of pressroom supplies and consumables available at competitive pricing and with quick delivery to customers around the world. According to Dave Telken, VP of Mark Andy Print Products, “It is essential to work closely with co-suppliers to ensure customers secure maximum benefit from their investments. Our global team of product advisors works hard to stay up-to-date on the latest product offerings and share that knowledge, and cost savings, with our customers.”

Cavalco concluded by saying, “We warmly thank everyone who visited our booth during this very successful Labelexpo Europe. See you in Barcelona in 2025!”

In label and package printing, there has always been a constant need to adapt and evolve to stay competitive. The increasing demand for cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and superior quality has put pressure on printing businesses to innovate and find better solutions. Enter Mark Andy’s Digital Pro Max, a groundbreaking offering in the realm of digital printing that is providing a noteworthy solution – moving beyond the traditional click system.

The click system, while being a widely accepted payment method, means that clients are billed per each print or ‘click’ of the press. As a result, the more prints you need, the higher the cost. This can have a significant impact on your overall printing expenses, especially when it comes to large volume jobs. But Mark Andy’s Digital Pro Max has been engineered to address these concerns.

So, how exactly does the Digital Pro Max achieve this?

  1. Innovation in Efficiency

Digital Pro Max optimizes your production process. Its high-speed performance, delivering up to 130 feet per minute, reduces the time spent on each job. This enhancement in speed can drastically decrease your per-unit cost, giving you an edge over traditional click charge systems.

  1. Reduced Material Wastage

The Digital Pro Max offers superior waste-saving features. Its efficient design minimizes set-up waste, meaning fewer materials are thrown away, and more of your money stays in your pocket.

  1. Versatility

This system is designed to handle a wide variety of substrates, from thin films to heavy-duty stocks. This versatility not only widens your service offerings but also ensures that the cost of specialty materials does not escalate your expenses, as might be the case with the traditional click system. Not to mention Digital Pro MAX is configurable to add flexo and converting features as needed (available late 2023)

  1. Simplified Maintenance

The Digital Pro Max is engineered to be user-friendly, which extends to its maintenance as well. This easy-to-maintain design reduces your need for costly repairs and service calls, indirectly saving you money that the click system might not account for.

Transitioning to Mark Andy’s Digital Pro Max presents a considerable economic advantage. This game-changing machine does more than just produce high-quality product – it fundamentally alters your cost structure, moving away from the unpredictable click charges and towards a more controlled, efficient, and cost-effective model.

By making this transition, printing businesses can enjoy substantial savings, an increased competitive edge, and the ability to provide better service to their clients. Additionally, this shift helps to future-proof your business in the rapidly changing landscape of the print industry.

In conclusion, Mark Andy’s Digital Pro Max is more than just a printing press; it is a strategic investment that brings significant monetary advantages by moving away from the traditional click system. As we embrace this change, we are not only harnessing the power of advanced technology but are also ensuring the sustainability and profitability of printing businesses in the long run.

Remember, in the world of printing, it is not just about what you print but also how you print it. So why not choose a method that is efficient, effective, and economical? Make the switch to Mark Andy’s Digital Pro Max today and take your printing business to new heights.
